We are pleased to present the first exhibition of Between Curatorial Projects, entitled BETWIXT & BETWEEN: DIASPORIC VISIONS OF LIMINAL SPACES with installation, collage, photography, photograms, and performance by Ana Hupe, Miji Ih, Daniela Medina Poch, and Gonzalo Reyes Araos. The exhibition takes place at our temporary space at Strausberger Platz 19, located within one of the historic neoclassical Hermann Henselmann towers, also known as “Haus des Kindes”.
The exhibition will open on Wednesday, June 26th at 6pm and feature a lecture performance by Daniela Medina Poch at 7pm. Visitors will gather at LAGE EGAL [SPL 19] and take a short walk to a small park near the fountain at Platz der Vereinten Nationen for the performance. Following the performance will be exhibition walkthroughs with Miji Ih, Daniela Medina Poch and Gonzalo Reyes Araos back at LAGE EGAL [SPL 19] at 8pm.
On Saturday, June 29th at 2pm, there will be an artists-in-conversation talk at LAGE EGAL [SPL 19] featuring Ana Hupe and Daniela Medina Poch, mediated by the curators of BETWIXT & BETWEEN.
The exhibition theme takes inspiration from the 1990 essay Cultural Identity and Diaspora by Stuart Hall which emphasized that diaspora involves a sense of rupture, dislocation, and longing for a lost or imagined homeland, yet is simultaneously characterized by the formation of new collective identities and cultural affiliations in the host land.
ANA HUPE is a multidisciplinary artist and scholar born in 1983 Rio de Janeiro based in Berlin. She is a doctor in Fine Arts by Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2016), having researched for one year at Udk Berlin, and works as Art History researcher at Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle. She dedicates her artistic work to rescue hidden histories of resistance, rewritten in installations with multiple narratives, building counter-memories of colonial archives. She applies various techniques such as lens-based media, texts, printmaking and sculpture. Her works are at the public collections of ESCALA (Essex Contemporary Art Latin America, UK), Museum of Modern Art, MAM- Rio de Janeiro; Museum of Art Rio, MAR; IPHAN – RJ (Institute for National Historical and Artistic Inheritance, Brazil).
MIJI IH is a photographer and visual artist born in 1990 in Seoul Korea based in Berlin. She studied Photography, New Document at Kaywon School of Art & Design in South Korea until 2013. In 2021, Ih graduated as a Meisterschülerin of Prof. Josephine Pryde at the Berlin University of the Arts. Her work deals with the question of what it means to be oneself under the conditions of a patriarchal system as well as a diasporic person in Western societies. In her photographs, she explores themes of womanhood, belonging, emancipation, and lust, and works against the background of her own biography. Taking different distances in photography thereby offers the possibility of both conveying the story of others and finding the right distance to her own story as an artist and to evoke individual memories.
DANIELA MEDINA POCH is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher from Bogotá based in Berlin. She has an MA from the Institute for Art in Context, Universität der Künste Berlin. Medina Poch is initiator of the platforms Babel Media Art and Embodied Climate Agency and writes regularly for specialized magazines and journals. She investigates how unofficial histories and interspecies entanglements contribute to the conception of ecocentric narratives, epistemic bridges that amplify non-hegemonic knowledge systems. Medina Poch’s work includes empirical, performative, and academic research, leading to sometimes long-term research threads and other times simple gestures. She works site-specifically and relationally with language subversion, performative interventions into public space and semiotics. Medina Poch also writes texts regularly for journals and newspapers and conducts workshops. Her interests lie in processes that emerge from—and in turn, exceed—artistic approaches.
GONZALO REYES ARAOS is a multidisciplinary artist born in 1980, in Quilpué, Chile based in Berlin since 2013. His works construct critical narratives that emphasize the role of humans in the construction of reality and time, creating spaces of encounter as part of an exercise that evokes reflections and memories from culture and technology. In 2004, he obtained a degree in Visual Arts, specializing in Painting at the School of Fine Arts in Valparaiso. Reyes Araos studied programming at the University of Strasbourg in France (2013-2014) and founded H Residency (2018), a contemporary art platform in the Atacama Desert in Chile. His works are inspired by his migration experiences (Switzerland, Belgium, China and Germany) and his explorations of the culture and environment of the Atacama Desert in Chile.
